Things to Know About the Dying

  1. What are their fears?
  2. What are their hopes and expectations?
  3.  What is their unfinished business?

Some of the fears the dying may face

  1. Loss of control
  2. Loss of personal identity
  3. Ceasing to be
  4. The unknown
  5. What happens after death
  6. Loss of relationships
  7. Incompleteness or lack of meaning in their lives
  8. Being a burden
  9. Loneliness
  10. The dying process itself
    • will it be painflil?
    • how long will it take?
    • will I be abandoned?
    • will I lose my dignity?

Some of the hopes and desires of the dying

  1. To get well and be productive again.
  2. To die with dignity and be surrounded by caring persons.
  3. To be able to maintain some degree of control.
  4. To be able to express their needs and feelings openly.
  5. To be able to manage their pain.

  1. Seeing a significant person who is far away.
  2. Taking one more trip to…
  3. Completing an unfinished project.
  4. Providing for loved ones.
  5. Healing any estrangements; feeling forgiven.
